If I weren't a bit skeptical of Google's evilquotient on this new product and if I didn't work for a competitor, I would consider writing my next nonfiction book in the form of an extended knol or family of knols. As is I am trying to work out how to do it on a wiki.

Chris,
Sure does look interesting, and I think you're right that it can potentially offer authors another means to build their brand, expertise, and reach more readers. In fact, I've just written 3 reasons you should start working on your article for Knol now so it's ready when they open the beta.
Cheers,
Stewart

The Google announcement did indicate they would share ad revenues with knol authors.

I can see how Knol will benefit Google but how much control would an author have writing for Knol, i.e. would authors be able to earn revenue through AdSense on Knol?

I think Google should provide Knol authors with a plugin tool to their blog where they can publish relevant articles to Knol straight from their blog.
