Screened In
I’m definitely a “do-it-yourself type.” But every once in a while I am what the Geek Squad’s Robert Stephens refers to as an “I thought I Could Do It Myselfer.” Here are some things I learned this weekend while installing a new screen on my patio door.
- Metal spline rollers can cut your fingers
- Aluminum screen can cut your fingers
- Metal spline rollers can cut aluminum screen
- Plastic spline rollers don’t cut your fingers
- Fiberglass screen doesn’t cut your fingers
- You should use fiberglass screen
- I could have purchased a new screen door for less than I ended up spending on parts

The sliders on my mother’s patio door are spline technology. Believe me, with little kids going in and out and running and not looking, spline is your friend. Be glad you have the spline option.
In our 1847 house in Rockport, all the screen doors are wooden and it would be a major carpentry project to replace the screen, so we sew in these cunning little patches.
