The Publishing Knot
I recently discovered Ann Mitchel’s Manage to Change blog and today she posts more smart thinking about our industry. As she points out, we have really tied ourselves up into a knot when it comes to being able to adapt quickly to the shifting landscape, and offers up some advice on how to untie ourselves.
Most publishers want to innovate but they tie themselves in a knot trying.
They’re tied to existing processes, revenue targets, and sometimes mindsets that haven’t significantly changed for decades, if not centuries.

Hey Chris, thanks for highlighting Ann’s blog. I wasn’t aware of it before now but I just stopped by and grabbed her RSS feed. I plan to keep up with her posts going forward.
Btw, what she’s describing is the core concept behind one of my favorite books of all time: “The Innovator’s Dilemma”, by Clayton Christensen. This book should be required reading for anyone in business today or coming out of school tomorrow.

Great picture! I was looking for one when I wrote that post and I didn’t see one. Thanks for picking up the “thread”
